Nallibaana Route

Oulu, Finland

In Finland, the vehicular road connecting Pikisaari island and Oulu has been trasformed into an only pedestrian and bicycle lane. Cariboni Group lighted up the project with Volta light fittings integrating the Eco Centric technology.

Nallibaana is a long road running through Pikisaari island and connecting it with Oulu. In April 2024, the City of Oulu started renovating the whole road, a project that will be completed in steps, including the renovation of the asphalt and paving materials, signage, as well as the transformation of a vehicular road into only pedestrian and bicycle lane.

The whole Oulu area holds a rich natural treasure; forests, swamps and water elements accommodate animals living together with humans in an established balance for years.

The lighting design project included the selection of lighting fixtures on low-height poles and adequate optics in order to mitigate as much as possible any spill light in the surroundings, respecting the highly sensitive natural context.

Ramboll Valostudio designed a light installation using Volta light fittings by Cariboni Group on low-height poles integrating the Switchable White technology from the Eco-Centric Lighting catalog. The Switchable White technology allows for alternating between a very warm, Blue-free light (CCT = 1800K), ideal for protecting nature when human presence is minimal, and a warm, almost Blue-free light (CCT = 3000K) that enhances human visual performance when there are more people. Thanks to the use of integrated timers in the fittings, Nallibaana operates at a color temperature of 3000K until midnight and 1800K from midnight onwards.

If we want to diligently respect our ecosystem with a more meaningful mentality around sustainability, every lighting fixture we produce and turn on has to cover a series of standards that go beyond our traditional knowledge.
